Trading on Kraken

What Kraken is

Kraken has operated from San Francisco since 2011, making it one of the oldest active crypto exchanges in the world and, arguably, the most grown-up venue in our review. It works under US regulation, with real banking relationships and public proof-of-reserves reporting.

Kraken has no exchange token of its own, and that is a deliberate position: a token promising fee discounts is something a regulator may well treat as a security.

The defining feature: real dollars

Almost everything on Kraken is quoted against USD rather than USDT. There are around seven hundred dollar pairs here, a direct consequence of banking relationships offshore venues simply do not have.

The practical value is large: you work with actual money in your account, not a stablecoin stand-in. That is exactly why our stablecoin section measures the honest dollar rate against Kraken — without a live USD pair there is nothing to compare USDT with.

What you get here

Spot — around seven hundred pairs against the dollar and the euro.

Futures — perpetual and dated contracts on the separate Kraken Futures platform.

Staking — one of the most developed on the market, with transparent terms and clear unbonding periods.

Kraken Pro — a professional terminal with advanced order types.

Bank transfers — deposit and withdraw real dollars and euro through a bank, with no intermediaries.

OTC desk — large trades away from the order book.

Who it suits

People holding serious sums who put reliability above breadth of listing: fourteen unbroken years and US regulation speak for themselves. People moving real dollars and euro through a bank. And anyone staking who wants clear, written terms.

Frequently asked

Why does Kraken have no exchange token?
It operates under US regulation, and a token promising discounts and returns is something a regulator may deem a security. Discounts here come from volume, not from holding a token.
Why does Kraken show so few pairs in your spot arbitrage?
Because we take only USDT pairs, and Kraken has fewer than fifty: nearly everything is quoted in real dollars. Mixing USD pairs with other venues’ USDT pairs would present USDT’s deviation as arbitrage.
Does Kraken have P2P?
No. Fiat comes in and out by bank transfer; there is no merchant-ad marketplace.
What makes Kraken useful for stablecoins?
It has genuine USD pairs, which is how we compute the live dollar rate. Without that anchor, USDT’s deviation would be measured against USDT itself.
Why does Kraken funding look different?
The exchange publishes the rate in dollars per contract per hour rather than as a fraction of price, and it accrues hourly rather than every eight hours.
What does trading on Kraken actually cost?
At the entry tier, 0.80% taker and 0.40% maker, from its own fee schedule. The rate falls with thirty-day volume: reaching 0.20% taker takes a quarter of a million dollars traded in a month.
How do I fund an account if there is no P2P?
Only by bank transfer or crypto from another wallet. Limits depend on your country and verification level, and the exchange publishes them on a page of its own — linked above.
Can a withdrawal be cancelled?
While it is "Initiated", yes; while "Pending", sometimes. Once the transaction is broadcast to the blockchain it cannot be cancelled. That is true everywhere, but Kraken states the states explicitly.
Why check the network before sending?
Kraken does not support every network for every coin, and a deposit sent on an unsupported network is usually unrecoverable. The supported list is in its funding help pages.
